Kajaga Public Toilets
Location: Kiriri, Burundi
Scope: Architecture, Architectural Visualisations
Year: 2023
Located in Kajaga, Bujumbura, this project was envisioned as a vibrant destination — a layered recreational park where leisure, tourism and community life intersect. The master plan brings together a diverse mix of attractions, from active sports facilities and a communal pool to retail spaces, dining venues and evening entertainment, creating a dynamic environment that evolves throughout the day and into the night.
Within this broader vision, even the most functional elements were treated as architectural opportunities. The ablution facilities were conceived as sculptural pavilions rather than background structures — simple, grounded forms wrapped in vertical timber screening that lends warmth, texture and rhythm to the landscape. Their clean geometry allows them to sit confidently within the open park setting while remaining visually understated.
A planted green roof softens the architecture further, merging built form with nature and reinforcing the park’s commitment to sustainability and environmental integration. The result is a modest yet carefully considered structure that elevates everyday utility into an intentional design statement — proving that thoughtful architecture extends to every corner of a place.
